The team at the Special Piping Materials office in Aberdeen is an impressive collection of individuals. They work together seamlessly to provide our customers with impeccable service, while also nurturing our relationships with our supply chain partners from across places such as Italy, Korea and the USA.

Special Piping Materials’ division in Aberdeen was the company’s fourth office to open and was launched in 2007. It is led by industry expert and Managing Director Jamie Hutchinson.

The 30,000 sq. warehouse allows the team to keep a wide variety of specialist products in stock, ready to ship quickly to clients who require them. The office has a key focus on the North Sea petroleum industry, but they do work further afield in key geographical areas wherever specialist pipes and fittings are required.

Within the petroleum industry, the North Sea is a key area and one that is known for its resources of liquid petroleum and natural gas that are found in huge underground reservoirs.

One of the newest members of our Aberdeen office is Fiona Ross, who has been with the sales team for just 10 months but has already had a huge impact. Read on to find out more about her.

A SPECIAL PIPING MATERIALS INTERVIEW WITH FIONA ROSS

  1. How long have you worked with SPM?

I started with SPM in May 2023.

  1. What role are you currently in?

I work as a Sales Executive at Special Piping Materials in the Aberdeen office.

  1. Can you give us an overview of your career so far?

I started in the motor trade industry but I always knew I wanted to get into an office job in Oil and Gas. I worked previously with another company within the industry in pipe, flanges and fittings, starting in administration and working my way through different roles such as document control, expediting and then into sales. While I started with SPM only 10 months ago, I have been in the industry for nearly 11 years so I have many contacts across the globe.

  1. What’s your favourite (and least favourite) day-to-day task?

My favourite part of the job is building relationships with colleagues and clients. I have met so many people through the industry who I would now class as friends which is great. Of course, as a sales person, I also like securing new projects and contracts!  My least favourite task would have to be documentation.

  1. What made you want to work for SPM?

I have never heard anything but good things about SPM! While it is an established global company, I love that every team works to help one another.

  1. What is your focus at the moment in your role?

My main focus is to build up good relationships with clients, as well as ensuring they are happy with the service we are currently providing.  ’m also trying to take in as much knowledge as possible from those with more years of experience,

  1. What does a typical ‘day in the sales office’ look like?

I start with a coffee and then I get stuck into work. I begin by checking emails and clearing through any outstanding admin, so I have time to give all my attention to incoming work and queries throughout the day.

We all tend to spend the day communicating with clients and colleagues, while working as a team to help each other. One of the things that makes the job even more enjoyable is how diverse the Aberdeen market is.

  1. What do you think the future holds for the piping world?

Hopefully more projects and orders for Special Piping Materials!

  1. What keeps you motivated at work each day?

I always like to better myself and make sure I’m doing the best I can in life and my job, so I’m always striving to be better than I was yesterday. The fact that everyone here is great to work with really helps.

  1. How do you relax after a hard day’s work in the office?

I have a 2-year-old son at home, so I don’t often get to relax! But once he‘s asleep in the evening, I like to do some form of exercise, whether that be the garage treadmill, gym or an online Pilates class. I also like to unwind and watch TV with my other half.

  1. If you had to choose another office around the world to work in, which would it be and why?

It is very hard to choose as we have so many exciting locations around the globe, in many places I would like to visit. I think if I had to pick one it would be Australia, as I’ve always wanted to visit, and it would be nice to see how they work. I’m also always cold, so I would definitely enjoy the heat out there!
