In the latest edition of our staff spotlight series, we\u2019re catching up with\u00a0<\/span>Jamie<\/strong>, an Accounts Assistant based at Special Piping Materials\u2019 Manchester office. Since joining the business in late 2022, Jamie has quickly become a valued member of the finance team, known for a methodical approach, attention to detail, and commitment to continuous improvement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Balancing day-to-day accounting responsibilities with ongoing AAT studies, Jamie brings both experience and drive to her role, helping to keep our finance function running smoothly while supporting both customers and suppliers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

1. How long have you worked with SPM?<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n
\n

I joined in November 2022, so I\u2019ve been here for nearly two years now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

2. What role are you currently in?<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n
\n

I\u2019m an Accounts Assistant in the Manchester office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

3. Can you give us an overview of your career so far?<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Before joining SPM, I worked in a variety of roles, including an apprenticeship at an accountancy firm and a position as a customs clerk, where I managed import clearances. I\u2019ve always enjoyed the structure and logic of accounting, so I wanted to return to that field. I\u2019m now studying for my AAT Level 3 qualification to build on my knowledge and broaden my expertise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

4. What\u2019s your favourite (and least favourite) day-to-day task?<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n
\n

My favourite part of the job is closing off the previous month. It\u2019s rewarding to know that everything has been reconciled, queries resolved, and reports generated so we can move forward with confidence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

On the other hand, inputting large volumes of data can be time-consuming. Accuracy is key though, so I take pride in ensuring it\u2019s done correctly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

5. What made you want to work for SPM?<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n
\n

I was looking for a role that would get me back into accounting, which is the area I enjoy most. SPM gave me that opportunity and has been really supportive in helping me work towards my AAT qualification. It\u2019s been a great fit for both my career goals and personal development.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

6. What is your focus at the moment in your role?<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Right now, I\u2019m focused on the VAT return and quarterly audit, alongside keeping up with day-to-day responsibilities like processing sales and purchases, responding to customer queries, and making sure everything behind the scenes runs smoothly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

7. What does a typical day in the accounts team look like?<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n
\n

We usually start the day with invoice runs \u2013 sending invoices to customers and logging incoming ones onto our system. We process supplier invoices, check them against purchase orders, and resolve any queries that come in. Throughout the day, we also send statements, generate reports, and manage bank transactions to keep everything up to date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

8. What keeps you motivated at work each day?<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n
\n

I get a real sense of satisfaction from knowing that everything is accurate and organised. It\u2019s also motivating to be part of such a friendly and supportive team \u2013 it makes a big difference.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

9. How do you relax after a hard day\u2019s work in the office?<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n
\n

I like to unwind with a good TV series, film, or game. When the weather\u2019s nice, I enjoy spending time outdoors in the garden.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

10. If you had to choose another office around the world to work in, which would it be and why?<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Probably Australia \u2013 mostly for the sunshine!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
