Special Piping Materials’ Perth office, established in 2006, is approaching its 20th anniversary. Over nearly two decades, the team in Perth has become a vital part of the company’s global operations. Under the guidance of Director Mark Davey, the Perth office delivers exceptional service to its clients, supporting major industries such as LNG and oil and gas.

The team’s 50,000 sq. ft warehouse houses an extensive range of specialist products, enabling them to anticipate and meet client demands quickly and efficiently. Special Piping Materials has built a strong reputation for reliability and expertise in the Australian market, and its commitment to quality ensures it remains a trusted partner in large-scale projects.

A key member of the team is Sales Manager Kelvin Chan, who joined Special Piping Materials two years ago. Kelvin oversees project sales, manages client relationships, and ensures every project aligns with the company’s strategic goals. In this blog, we sit down with Kelvin to learn more about his role, his career journey, and his perspective on the piping industry in Australia.

A SPECIAL PIPING MATERIALS INTERVIEW WITH KELVIN CHAN

  1. How long have you worked with SPM?

I will have been with Special Piping Materials for two years as of December 2024.

  1. What role are you currently in?

I am currently working as the Sales Manager – Projects. My responsibilities include overseeing project sales, maintaining strong client relationships, and ensuring that each project aligns with both our strategic goals and our customers’ expectations.

  1. Can you give us an overview of your career so far?

My career in the piping and fittings industry began in 2012 as an Internal Sales professional. This initial role provided me with a solid foundation in sales processes and client support. Over the years, I’ve gained valuable experience, taking on roles with increasing responsibilities that eventually led me to join SPM Australia.

Since joining Special Piping Materials, I’ve deepened my technical knowledge, particularly in Austenitic Steels, while refining my skills in sales and contract management. These experiences have enabled me to support our clients’ unique requirements effectively and contribute to driving successful projects.

  1. What’s your favourite (and least favourite) day-to-day task?

My favourite task is engaging directly with clients to understand their project objectives and challenges. I enjoy collaborating with them and the team to deliver solutions that not only meet but often exceed their expectations. Seeing projects progress successfully is incredibly rewarding.

On the flip side, my least favourite task is handling routine administrative work, like data entry and documentation. While necessary to ensure operational accuracy, it can sometimes feel like it takes time away from more strategic or client-facing activities.

  1. What made you want to work for SPM?

I was drawn to Special Piping Materials because of its dynamic and agile work environment. Decisions here are executed swiftly and efficiently, and the team’s youthful energy and adaptability make it an exciting place to work. Being in an industry that is constantly evolving, this ability to respond quickly to market demands and client needs was very appealing to me.

  1. What is your focus at the moment in your role?

My current focus is on preparing SPM to secure and execute the significant projects scheduled for the coming year. This involves proactive engagement with clients, aligning our resources, and ensuring that the team is fully equipped to meet the demands of these major opportunities.

  1. What are the big piping trends at the moment in your region?

A notable trend in the Australian market is the growing acceptance of exotic materials such as Duplex and Super Duplex stainless steel, often sourced from China. This shift reflects changing perceptions of quality and cost-effectiveness among end users. It’s an exciting development that has the potential to reshape supply chains and material standards in the region, and I’m closely monitoring its impact on the industry.

  1. What are the priorities for the AUS sales team at the moment?

Our primary priority is clear: to secure every viable opportunity and maximise our success in the market. We aim to continue building strong client relationships and maintaining our reputation for delivering high-quality solutions.

  1. What does your typical day look like?

My day typically begins with managing a large volume of emails. I filter and prioritise them to set the day’s agenda and ensure no urgent matters are overlooked. From there, I organise and delegate tasks to the team to keep workflows efficient and focused. Throughout the day, I oversee project progression, engage with clients, and provide support where needed to ensure smooth operations.

  1. What do you think the future holds for the piping world?

I’m optimistic about another growth phase in the piping industry, particularly in Australia, where there are many significant projects in the pipeline. With a growing emphasis on sustainable infrastructure, the industry is well-positioned for expansion not only in oil and gas but also in other sectors. It’s exciting to think about the opportunities that lie ahead and how they will shape the industry.

  1. What keeps you motivated at work each day?

My family is a big motivator, of course, but what truly drives me is the thrill of tackling challenges that others might see as impossible. Solving complex inquiries and successfully delivering on ambitious orders gives me immense satisfaction. It’s that ‘thrill of the hunt’ that keeps me motivated every day.

  1. How do you relax after a hard day’s work in the office?

After a busy day, I love spending time with my family, especially with our newest addition, who’s just 4 months old. Watching him grow is a joy. When I have time, I also enjoy staying active with a workout at the gym, but I’ll admit that winding down with a glass of fine whisky is often my go-to way to relax and reflect on the day.

  1. If you had to choose another office around the world to work in, which would it be and why?

Australia is a fantastic place to work, but if I had to choose another office, it would probably be Singapore. With my family’s roots in West Malaysia, Singapore would provide an opportunity to be closer to them while also exposing me to diverse clientele and untapped markets. The challenge of exploring these new opportunities is something that really excites me.
